>> washington archbishopconald whirl has a new title and the catholic church is celebrating. we're on the phone with rome going in depth. new developments in the stabbing death of a virginia teenager tonight and an arrest. a deadly day on the roads. two people killed in northern virginia. the mother of one is speaking out and a violent crash in maryland as police try to make it stop. this wreck took a life as l. a family of four all

innocent victims in that maryland crash and that is where we begin. thanks for joining us at 10. i'm will thomas. >> i'm maureen umeh. montgomery county police were trying to pull over the car when the driver crossed the center line and in an instant, lives were changed and matt ackland is live with more. >> reporter: just a horrible accident. let me tell you some of the information we have learned. this began at a restaurant close to this spot around 3:00 today. police were called after there was a report of a domestic dispute between a man and a woman and then their child was there also. apparently the man jumped into the woman's car, van, and drove off with the baby, the 11-month- old inside. not long ago after that, that is when the collision happened here. the van somehow crossed over the centerline right in to an suv and there were four people inside that suv. three were family members. let's go ahead and get to you some video so you can see the

awful accident. police don't have any idea how fast those vehicles were going, but just by look at this wreckage, it appears that they were going at a good pace. the four people inside that suv were all injured. one of them died from their injuries on site and here's what police had to say earlier in the day. >> for reasons still under investigation, the green van and a gray suv, which was travelling westbound on cherry hill road, collided. the collision reconstruction unit is on the scene trying to determine what brought the two vehicles together and why the collision occurred. >> try to piece together, there might have been a police officer following one of the vehicles at this point and not sure what was going on. but that is part of your investigation, correct? >> reporter: that's right. we believe there were some police participation in this, prior to the collision. to what degree the officer was involved, we don't know. >> reporter: all right, we

should also tell you that inside that van, there was that 11-month-old baby. apparently the baby was inside a child's seat. thank goodness because we talked to a witness earlier today who saw this all happen and she said when police got here, they broke a window and were able to rescue that child inside. take a listen to this woman. tell me how they got the baby out again? >> the baby in the car seat, still in the car seat, you know. check the car seat and take the baby. baby's okay. >> wow. wow. >> uh-huh. >> reporter: that's great. >> she's lucky. >> reporter: all right, back out live here in montgomery county, you can see the suv badly damaged is being put on to that tow truck and taken away and if we pan over to the right, there is that van. it hit that pole so hard that it cracked it. you can see pepco crews are on the scene and once that car or van is pulled away, pepco will

then work to repair that pole. we should also tell you inside that suv there were three family members. four people in total. all of them taken to the hospital and there was a brother, a sister, and their father is the one who passed away. back to you. >> clearly, matt, from the images you're showing us, a violent wreck out there. >> yeah. >> matt ackland live in silver spring. maureen. another deadly crash in gainsville, virginia. the 22-year-old carlos lucas is under arrest. police say he crashed into another car that burst into flames. the passersby pulled the 21- year-old out of the car badly burned and alive. the back seat passenger was killed and another passenger, 20-year-old megan was thrown from the front seat and died of her injuries. fox 5s roz plater spoke with megan's family tonight and is live in our newsroom with the details. >> reporter: megan's family said she loved working with children and was supposed to

interview today for a job as a nanny and she and her boyfriend were sitting at a stoplight on the way home from carrying out a good deed when they were struck. the neighbor was killed and her boyfriend critically injured and her family is devastated. >> i can't imagine my life without her. she's, she was a sweetheart. and such a joy to be around. always smiling with me. i am going to ms. her coming into the house, hey, mommy, how are you and i won't that have that anymore. it was a crazy, stupid thing for this person to do that. and i don't know why people get in their car when they drinking or doing drugs and making foolish mistakes like they do and then costing two people their lives. you can't get that back. and i don't know that they will or if they realize what they have done. i have no idea. all i can say is i hope this person pays for what he's done.

>> reporter: that family is working through the -- and planning a funeral for a 20- year-old and they're worried about megan's boyfriend who had to be flown. maureen? >> thank you for the update. new tonight, monasses city police have arrested two teenagers in the murder of a 15- year-old boy. miguel hernandez was walking home from school when he was attacked and stabbed to death. the 18-year-old mauriceo -- mauricio martinez and a 17-year- old are charged with murder and gang participation and more arrests could come. a woman was raped on the side of a road and her attack or the run. investigators say she was walking northbound on georgia avenue in aspen hill and that is before 1:00. a man forced her nearby into a wooded area, attacked her and took off. and the washington

archbishop is a new cardinal. >> and he elevated two dozen from around the court and -- around the world and whirl was around them. >> reporter: there was a lot of rejuicing as the catholic church made 24 new cardinals, among them, two americans, archbishop raymond kirk and archbishop donald whirl of washington, d.c. college you make your way up to the pope's chair, you're reminded of a couple of things. one, just how symbolic all of this is that it represents the tie between the church in washington, our nation's capitol and the church here in rome. >> reporter: they now have the red hats, red being a sign that the new cardinals are willing to shed their blood for the faith and in today's mass, they were given the special

cardinals rings. afternoonbishop whirl us this entering what some called the most exclusive men's club in the world. >> every catholic has a tie to the pope, but the cardinals, because they asked to work very, very closely with him, have a special bond. and that is what you witnessed today. the bonding, the visible sign of that bond and the imposition of the hat. >> reporter: there are over 200 cardinals over the globe and, at this point, about 150 came to the festivity this weekend and the key number is 121 and that is the number of cardinals under the age of ity and could vote in the next papal election and that could be elected. for most signs, the cardinals over the past centuries have elected one of their own and one of the key questions people are asking, could an american be elected pope? the answer is probably not and at least it seems the u.s. is too much of an economic and military superpower and they don't want to make it a

spiritual superpower; however, the dynamics of the cardinal -- college of cardinal are interesting and anything could happen. >> and on the phone from rome is susan gibbs, the director for commune casing of the afternoon diocese of washington. welcome. >> thanks for having me. >> our very own formally archbishop donald whirl, one of the prince's of the church as they're called, the cardinals and the ceremony is taking place in rome and set the scene for us. i understand a huge delegation came from d.c. and set the scene of what happened today. >> reporter: it was amazing. there were over 400 people with our group and i walked in to saint petary square an hour and a half and ran into tons of people i knew. the square was packed and there was a line tripled around the square and that map -- and people trying to get in. not everyone trying to get in and it was packed and there were people from all over the world. >> right.

>> and there are 203 an bishops elevated, right? >> there were 24 elevated today. >> i see. >> and they're coming from the united states, south americaing, africa, europe. there were 10 italians, a large contemperaturent from italy. some of the rowdiest groups. >> yeah, yeah. >> and a wonderful group from congo. >> and we americans are known for making a lot of noise to show our appreciation and they should have topped cathol simp hierarchy below the pope. what are their duties? a lot of people are wondering what will cardinal whirl be doing differently than if he was archbishop? >> reporter: on top of running the archdiocese in washington, he's the top advisor to the point and an earthquake legislator to a new -- an elector to a new pope until he turns 80 and --

>> and when he returns to d.c., are his duties different? will they be different than before? >> and there is more responsibilities with the vatican, and the pope will probably -- to a council -- [ indiscernible ] of specialized work here for the vatican and the church throughout the world and he will be called on a lot more and for talks and events and to weigh in on topics and moves into a special group of advisors within the united states. >> would you say that for those, that this was a spiritual journey for those who were able to go? >> it was. this is called a pilgrimage for people who went and those who were here a few days were in prayer and some someone said no, i feel chilled and it moved me in a way.

until now, the use of condoms to prevent stds is not allowed by the catholic church. the statement from the pope coincides with a new campaign from the district of columbia called rubber revolution dc.com. the website is behind me and joining me here in the web center to talk about it is dr. kimberly jeffreys leonard. big title here, chief operating officer for the d.c. department of health. thanks for coming in tonight. >> thank you for having me. >> and talk about the grim statistics in d.c. why this is prevalent. what are the numbers we should know about? >> reporter: about 3% is affected by hiv aids and that is a huge number and found in our research that they do not

>> i was homeless before coming in here. you talk about someone comes from a six-figure income, you know, sleeping in the back of my truck. >> reporter: there are a lot of people at the frederick mission who have fallen on hard time and some line up for a hot meal. >> barbeque chicken, barbeque beef or chicken and broccoli. >> reporter: and it's lunchtime here and the parking lot really helps to tell the sister. story. there is nowhere to park and the people running the mission say that is because there are a lot of people coming here who need a car and have to get to work. they don't have any money for food. >> before we might have been serving the homeless and unemployed folks or couldn't afford some vehicles. now we're seeing those who have income that can afford them a vehicle and people who never thought they would need our serves we're now seeing them to

fredericksburg and to that mid- atlantic, boston, 43; new york, 48 and sky conditions not bad. a few clouds are rolling in and have that frontal system as well and over areas of the west, a different story and that is where they're seeing snow, the s word and plenty of rain and there is a system that is active and that is in through the course of tonight and on the back side and that is going to move towards us and into that tuesday through thursday period. the second frontal system will move through and have that shot

of cold air. we'll be warm and then we deal with showers and storms associated with that by the time we hit tuesday night and into wednesday and we're not talking widespread rainfall at all and just enough to make it inconvenient and looks like some of this is going to be sticking around for thanksgiving day and to on the back side, we'll see the snow and going to the upper mid- west, you may want to check the travel plans ahead of time. temperatures into the 50s tomorrow, though and have some clouds and sun, mixture of both and by midday, 50 degrees and by 5:00, hit the 51 degrees mark and putting it together for you and on that cooler side, partly cloudy and colder outside. looking at 43 degrees and a cooler day for tomorrow. no 60s to talk about and 54 degrees is what we're hitting. the five-day forecast for you, again, showers expected by tuesday night and wednesday and
